4. Audio Interface Setup

Find a suitable place to setup the audio interface and laptop. Unpack the computer but do not power it on yet.

If using a HASP USB key to license IRIS, please connect it to the computer now.

Revision 2 Kit (Zoom F4)

Physical Setup

  1. Ensure the four XLR connectors of the PPAc Receiver are properly connected to the Zoom F4 in the correct order (1 to 1, 2 to 2, and so on).

  2. Connect the long Cat5e STP cable from the receiver assembly to the PPAc receiver. Make sure it clicks in place. You should hold the PPAc receiver while doing this to prevent any stress on the cable underneath.

  3. Connect the cable going to the source to the XLR output MAIN OUT 1.

  4. Check that the short 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm stereo loopback cable is connected between SUB OUT and INPUT 5/6, as shown.

    Loopback

  5. Connect the DC power adapter to mains power and the USB cable to the computer while leaving the other ends connected to the F4.

  6. Power on the F4 by holding the POWER button for a few seconds. All of the other equipment should be connected by now.

Zoom F4 Configuration

The F4 can be easily configured for use with IRIS by loading the IRIS settings file stored on the pre-installed SD card:

  1. Press the MENU button

  2. Use the knob above the MENU button to scroll down to the SYSTEM setting, then press the button to enter the SYSTEM menu.

  3. Open Backup/Load Settings

  4. Select SD1

  5. Select Load/Delete

  6. Select IRIS settings file, and then Yes to Are you sure?

Important

The detailed Zoom F4 configuration is explained here. Please review these settings and check the device is setup correctly.

Tip

Although the F4 will remember its settings between measurement sessions, we recommend you load the IRIS settings file every time you set up the system.

Final Setup Steps

Please now power on all remaining equipment including the computer and sound source.

Connect headphones to the jack on the right side of the unit and adjust the headphone volume knob on the front panel to listen to the microphone signals. If you notice any buzzing or any electrical noises please carefully check the entire setup.

Shutdown Procedure

Hold down the POWER button for a few seconds to power off the unit.

Revision 1 Kit (MOTU 4pre)

Physical Setup

  1. Remove the MOTU 4pre from the IRIS kit.

  2. Ensure the CBM box (Connection Box MOTU) is properly inserted into the back of the MOTU 4pre. Each channel should be clicked in place.

    CBM

  3. Connect the long Cat5e STP cable from the receiver assembly to the CBM box. Make sure it clicks in place.

  4. Connect the cable going to the source to the TRS output LINE 4.

    Note

We use LINE 4 in order to clear the CBM box, and also since the output level of LINE 3/4 is fixed, leaving all control to IRIS software. This is especially useful for measurements with a calibrated IRIS system, where the output must be a known level.

  5. Connect power to the 4pre using the included DC power adapter, and connect it to the computer using the USB cable.

  6. Power on the 4pre by pressing the right-most button on the front panel.

MOTU 4pre Configuration

  1. Power on the computer and log in to Windows.

  2. Open the MOTU software CueMix Fx. This software is used to configure the 4pre.

    Note

If CueMix FX displays a message saying "No MOTU Audio Devices that support CueMix found", please check the 4pre is connected to USB and powered on. If the message persists, please restart your computer.

    Warning

If CueMix FX starts but appears unresponsive, please restart your computer. An example of an unresponsive CueMix is shown below - all settings are set to minimum, PAN is set to -64, and it's not possible to adjust anything.

    CueMix Unresponsive

  3. The 4pre configuration for use with IRIS can be recalled by selecting File, Load Hardware Preset....

    CueMix Preset

    Warning

Please double check the configuration before proceeding, which is described here.

Final Setup Steps

Please power on any remaining equipment including the sound source.

Connect headphones to the jack on the front panel labelled PHONES and adjust the volume knob above it to listen to the microphone signals. If you notice any buzzing or any electrical noises please carefully check the entire setup.

Shutdown Procedure

At the end of the measurement session, please shutdown the 4pre correctly: Hold down the power button (right-most button) and wait for the countdown to finish before releasing the knob.

Important

The 4pre will remember its settings after you power it down and back on again, but please check the above configuration every time.
